Esabaphilayo Isibani was formally constituted as a non-profit organisation, operating under the NPO Act, Act 71 of 1997. That founding document sets out not only our name, but the legal standing that lets us serve our community reliably over time.
Our name
The organisation is constituted and registered under the name Esabaphilayo Isibani, operating as a non-profit organisation under the NPO Act, Act 71 of 1997.
In isiZulu
Isibani means light, or lamp.
We take that literally: our work exists to bring light — support, direction, relief — into the parts of community life that need it most.
A body corporate
Our constitution establishes the organisation as a body corporate. In practice, that means:
Independent existence
The organisation exists in its own right, separately from its individual members.
Continuity
It continues to exist even as its membership changes, and as different office bearers take on leadership.
Property rights
It is able to own property and other possessions in its own name.
Legal standing
It is able to sue, and be sued, in its own name — giving the organisation the same legal footing as any formal institution.
